French Open: Jo Wilfried Tsonga seems be the man on the mission

It has been over 3 decades that the French Open title hasn’t been bagged by a Frenchman. Jo Wilfried Tsonga, the 13th seed, is no outsider to big games, since he had made it to the run for the semifinals last year in Paris. His wins and rich experience against the top contenders of the game proves it clearly that he has it in him to be the best in the game. All French tennis fans will glued to the television this time, hoping that for the first time a Frenchman would bring in the trophy, a Tsonga, seems to be the man on the duty.

Back in the year 2008, Tsonga showcased a spectacular gameplay and made it to the finale of the Australian Open. He did away with Andy Murray, Britain’s No. 1, fellow Frenchman Richard Gasquet and also Rafael Nadal. Next, in the year 2011, Tsonga showcased his strong mental strength when he made a comeback post facing a challenge at Wimbledon against Roger Federer. The game went on for more than three hours and the Frenchman stormed back with a score of 3-6, 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. The very same year Tsonga went to the finale of ATP World Tour Finals.

Yannick Noah was the last French to have bagged the Roland Garros back in the year 1983 as he crushed Mats Wilander, Sweden national stunningly. Talking about a French player bagging the tournament this time, jean Gachassin, the President of the French Tennis Federation commented that he still thinks and hopes that the tournament will be won by a Frenchman. With such words of inspiration and encouragement, Jo Wilfried embarks upon a major mission to bring the prestigious French Open trophy home, at last.

Gasquet Faces Up Against Haase

Richard Gasquet will take on Robin Haase of Netherlands in the first round of the Gerry Weber Open tomorrow. It’s going to be the third encounter between these two players. Both the previous ones had gone Gasquet’s way.

As far as Gasquet’s recent form is concerned, he got knocked out from the third round of the recently finished French Open, but, that was not such a bad performance considering the fact that he had entered the tournament with no match practice at all. He was getting recovered from his back problem in the weeks prior to the tournament.

On the contrary, Haase has featured in a lot of clay court competitions in the recent past. He hasn’t won that much in those competitions though, but, he at least has considerable amount of match practice in his stride.

However, since the tournament is going to be played on grass courts, it’s a different ball game altogether. Gasquet is a far better player than his opponent on the green surfaces and thus, will certainly hold the advantage.

The only thing that can go against Gasquet is that Haase is a big hitter and he is fully capable of capitalizing on the room that would be created on the court because of the Frenchman trying to hang back. But, the question is if he would be able to do that accurately on the day.

The last time that these two players had locked horns with each other on grass court, Gasquet had steam rolled over Haase. He can do something similar again if he is at his best.

There is a big difference between the world rankings of the two players with Gasquet being 41 positions higher than his 27 year old Dutch opponent.
