TSONGA LOSES TO CHARDY
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has been defeated by his fellow countryman, Jeremy Chardy, in the second round of the Rogers cup. Tsonga is ranked sixth in the official rankings of WTA and he was given third seed in this competition. But, he has been stunned by a player who is much lower in rankings than him.
Chardy defeated Tsonga in the straight sets by 6-4, 7-6(4). Tsonga has been in good nick in the last few months and he played well in the Olympics as well. He won the silver medal in the men’s doubles competition by playing with Michael Llodra. He was considered as one of the top favourites to win the Rogers Cup, but, he wasn’t even able to go to the third round and was flattened by Chardy.
This was the second match between Tsonga and Chardy, and you could have got great odds with betvictor.com on a Chardy win. Both the players had met for the first time at Johannesburg three years ago. In that match, Tsonga had defeated Chardy easily. So, Chardy took his revenge and knocked Tsonga out of the Rogers Cup.
In the first set, Chardy was all over Tsonga. He hit a lot of winners and didn’t give Tsonga any chance to settle into his groove. Chardy won the first set easily by 6-4. In the second set, Tsonga showed his class and played some very good groundstrokes. The second set went into the tie breaker. But, in the tie breaker, Tsonga missed some easy chances and let the match go away.
Chardy was overjoyed (as were the fans who had been betting with Bet Victor!) after defeating one of the top 10 players in the world. After the match, Chardy said that he was not that confident before the start of the match. Tsonga has been performing brilliantly in the recent times and he was a bit nervous before facing Tsonga. But, after the first few games, things became easy for him. In the third round, Chardy will play against Marcel Granollers of Spain.
